AFF course behind you — what’s next?
Completing the AFF training (Accelerated Freefall) is a huge achievement, but in reality it’s only the beginning of your skydiving adventure. After passing the program, you are no longer a passenger — you become a skydiver who exits the plane independently, controls freefall, opens the canopy, and lands. Ahead of you is the stage of consolidating your skills and developing consciously.
Consolidation jumps
Right after AFF, you perform a series of solo consolidation jumps. This is a key stage in which you:
- refine a stable body position in freefall
- practice controlled turns and changes of direction
- learn to separate from other skydivers before deployment
- work on precision and landing safety
At this stage, it’s worth jumping regularly — longer breaks mean you have to refresh your habits.
The path to a skydiving license
The next step is to obtain a license, which formally confirms your skills and opens the door to jumping in your country and abroad, also without the direct supervision of an instructor. A license usually requires:
- a specified minimum number of jumps completed
- passing specific elements of the program, including in-air work and accuracy landings
- knowledge of safety procedures and equipment handling
It’s worth confirming the detailed requirements at your drop zone and with the licensing organization.
Your own gear or rental?
At the beginning, you usually use the drop zone’s equipment — it’s convenient and economical while you’re figuring out your preferences. Over time, once you stabilize your exit weight and know what canopy you need, it’s worth thinking about your own harness and canopy. Be sure to choose your first personal gear with an experienced person — matching the canopy to your skill level is above all a matter of safety.
Which direction should you develop in?
Skydiving includes many disciplines — over time you’ll find your own:
- Landing precision and accuracy
- Group jumps and formations (RW)
- Freefly — jumps in vertical positions
- Wingsuit, at a later stage, after gaining experience
- Camera jumps and filming
Safety is the foundation of progress
The best skydivers are those who don’t skip stages. Regularity, working with instructors, and humility toward conditions matter more than haste. Introduce each new element gradually and consciously.
